Essential Thai Vocabulary — The Words That Do the Heavy Lifting

If you're going to invest time in learning Thai vocabulary, invest it in the words that appear everywhere.

The core verbs: ไป (bpai) — to go. มา (maa) — to come. กิน/ทาน (gin/taan) — to eat. ดื่ม (deum) — to drink. ซื้อ (sue) — to buy. อยู่ (yuu) — to be/stay. รู้ (ruu) — to know. ได้ (dai) — can/able to.

The essential question words: อะไร (arai) — what. ที่ไหน (tee nai) — where. เมื่อไหร่ (muea rai) — when. ทำไม (thammai) — why. อย่างไร (yaang rai) — how. เท่าไหร่ (thao rai) — how much. ใคร (khrai) — who.

The connector words: และ (lae) — and. หรือ (rue) — or. แต่ (dtae) — but. เพราะ (phro) — because. ถ้า (thaa) — if.

The yes/no system: Thai doesn't have direct yes/no equivalents. Instead, you repeat the verb with ไม่ (mai) for negation. Understanding this structure is essential.

Essential adjectives: ดี (dee) — good. อร่อย (aroi) — delicious. สวย (suay) — beautiful. ใหญ่ (yai) — big. เล็ก (lek) — small. แพง (phaeng) — expensive. ถูก (thuuk) — cheap/correct.
