How Long Does It Take to Learn Thai?

This is the question everyone asks before they start and it deserves an honest answer.

According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) — the U.S. government body that trains diplomats — Thai is a Category IV language. That means approximately 1,100 class hours to reach professional working proficiency for a native English speaker.

If you study 1 hour a day: 3 years to professional level, but conversational in 12–18 months. If you study 2 hours a day: 18 months to professional level, conversational in 6–9 months. If you're living in Thailand with full immersion: dramatically faster.

Practical milestones: Month 1–2: Basic greetings, numbers, ordering food, getting a taxi. Month 3–6: Holding simple conversations, understanding context in daily situations, reading basic signs. Month 6–12: Real conversations about your life, understanding Thai people talking to each other. Year 1–2: Comfortable with most daily topics, reading with a dictionary. Year 3+: Approaching fluency.

The biggest variable is consistency. Someone who studies 20 minutes every day will outperform someone who studies 3 hours once a week. Thai rewards daily contact.
