How to Ask for Directions in Thai — Getting Around Like a Local

Getting around Thailand in Thai is one of the most practical skills you can develop.

The core questions: ไปที่... ยังไงครับ/คะ (bpai tee... yang ngai khrap/kha?) — How do I get to...? ...อยู่ที่ไหนครับ/คะ (...yuu tee nai khrap/kha?) — Where is...?

Useful place words: ถนน (thanon) — road/street. ซอย (soi) — side street/alley. สี่แยก (see yaek) — intersection. ไฟแดง (fai daeng) — traffic light.

Direction words: ตรงไป (trong bpai) — straight ahead. เลี้ยวซ้าย (liaw saai) — turn left. เลี้ยวขวา (liaw khwaa) — turn right. ย้อนกลับ (yon glap) — turn back. อยู่ใกล้ๆ (yuu glai glai) — nearby. อยู่ไกล (yuu glai) — far away.

Clarifying when you don't understand: พูดซ้ำได้ไหม (phut sam dai mai?) — Can you repeat that? พูดช้าๆ ได้ไหม (phut cha cha dai mai?) — Can you speak slowly? ขอเขียนได้ไหม (kho khian dai mai?) — Can you write it down?

The map hack: Show a map on your phone with your destination pinned. Point and say: "ไปที่นี่ยังไงครับ?" Works when your vocabulary for places isn't strong yet.
