How to Order Food in Thai — Every Word You Need
Eating in Thailand is one of life's great joys and knowing how to order food in Thai makes the experience ten times better.
Starting the order: ขอ... (kho...) — I would like... เอา... (ao...) — I'll take... (more casual). So: ขอข้าวผัดหนึ่งจาน (kho khao phat nueng jaan) = Can I have one plate of fried rice.
Specifying how you want it: ไม่เผ็ด (mai phet) — not spicy. เผ็ดนิดหน่อย (phet nit noi) — a little spicy. ไม่ใส่ผักชี (mai sai phak chee) — no coriander. ไม่ใส่ผงชูรส (mai sai phong chuu rot) — no MSG.
Drinks: ขอน้ำเปล่า (kho naam bplao) — water please. ชาเย็น (chaa yen) — Thai iced tea. กาแฟเย็น (kafae yen) — iced coffee. หวานน้อย (waan noi) — less sweet.
Asking what's available: มีอะไรบ้าง (mee arai baang?) — What do you have? แนะนำอะไรได้บ้าง (naenam arai dai baang?) — What do you recommend?
Getting the bill: เก็บตังค์ด้วยครับ/ค่ะ (kep tang duay khrap/kha) — Bill please. แยกบิลได้ไหม (yaek bin dai mai?) — Can we split the bill?
After eating: อร่อยมาก (aroi mak) — Very delicious. Always say this. It makes cooks genuinely happy.
