How to Type Thai on Your Phone — Set Up and Start Texting
If you can type Thai, you can text Thai friends, read Thai messages, and interact with Thai content online. It's easier to set up than you think.
iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Thai. You'll see Thai (standard QWERTY-layout) and Thai Pattachote. Most learners start with the standard Thai layout.
Android: Settings → General Management → Language and Input → On-screen Keyboard → Samsung Keyboard or Gboard → Languages and Types → Add keyboard language → Thai.
The Thai keyboard layout: The standard Thai keyboard maps Thai consonants to specific keys. You'll need to memorise the layout — or use a sticker sheet. Most people spend 1–2 weeks memorising through use. Repetition in texting builds muscle memory fast.
Input tricks: Long press keys often reveals related characters. Swipe typing works surprisingly well for Thai on Gboard. Keep autocorrect on — it learns your common Thai words quickly.
Transliteration apps: If you're not ready for full Thai keyboard, Google Translate allows you to type romanised Thai and get Thai script output. Not for long-term use but helpful as a bridge.
Practical tip: Start by texting simple phrases to Thai friends or a language exchange partner. Real texting conversations are more motivating than typing practice in isolation.
Being able to type Thai opens the entire Thai internet and social media world to you.
