Learning Thai: Self-Study Roadmap — Month by Month

No teacher? No problem. Here's a month-by-month self-study plan for learning Thai.

Month 1 — Foundations: Learn the 5 tones. Basic greetings and polite particles. Numbers 1–100. Essential question words. Days and basic time expressions. Start Duolingo Thai.

Month 2 — Core Vocabulary: Top 200 frequency words. Food and ordering vocabulary. Transport and directions. Basic verbs. Start Anki with Thai core vocabulary deck.

Month 3 — Script Begins: Mid-class consonants (7). High-class consonants (11). Short vowels (8 common ones). Begin reading simple words. Practice 15 minutes of writing daily.

Month 4 — Script Completion: Low-class consonants (24). Long vowels. Tone rules (start with mid-class). Begin reading simple signs and menus.

Month 5 — Conversation Practice: Start iTalki sessions (1/week minimum). HelloTalk for daily exchange. Order food in Thai every single day.

Month 6 — Expansion: Intermediate ThaiPod101 series. 500+ vocabulary active. Holding short conversations on familiar topics.

Month 7–12 — Consolidation: Increase conversation frequency. Thai media consumption. Weekly journaling in Thai. Reading children's books.

Year 2: Complex conversation topics. Reading Thai newspapers with dictionary. Understanding casual speech between Thai people.

This self-study roadmap is realistic and achievable. The key is daily contact — even 20 minutes a day compounds over a year into something remarkable.
