Polite Thai Words You Should Know

Polite Thai Words You Should Know — The Language of Respect

Thai society is deeply hierarchical and respectful. The polite layer of Thai language is not optional — it's how you show respect, and respect is everything in Thai culture.

The essential polite particles: ครับ (khrap) — used by men at the end of sentences to show politeness/respect. ค่ะ / คะ (kha) — used by women. ค่ะ (falling tone) for statements, คะ (mid tone) for questions. นะครับ / นะคะ — the particle นะ adds softness; combined with khrap/kha it's warm and friendly.

These particles are non-negotiable in formal and semi-formal settings. Dropping them sounds rude regardless of what the words themselves say.

Honorific vocabulary: ท่าน (than) — you (very formal). เรียน (rian) — to respectfully address someone. กระผม (kraphom) — I (very formal, used by men in official contexts).

When speaking to elders or superiors: ขอโทษครับ/ค่ะ (kho thot) — I apologise/excuse me. รบกวนครับ/ค่ะ (rop kuuan) — I'm sorry to bother you. ได้โปรด (dai bprot) — Please (formal).

Addressing by name: Thais address people by nickname or first name with คุณ (khun) prefix for polite contexts. Using someone's full first name with khun is respectful and always appropriate.

Thai politeness isn't complicated — but it is important. These polite Thai words and customs will earn you respect everywhere you go.
