There's a version of Thailand you see as a tourist who only speaks English. And then there's a completely different Thailand that opens up the moment you know even 30 words of Thai.

At the airport and transport: ไปที่... (bpai tee...) — Go to... อยู่ที่ไหน (yuu tee nai?) — Where is...? เท่าไหร่ (thao rai?) — How much? จอดที่นี่ (jot tee nee) — Stop here.

At the hotel: มีห้องว่างไหม (mee hong waang mai?) — Do you have a free room? ราคาเท่าไหร่ (raakhaa thao rai?) — What's the price?

At restaurants: ไม่เผ็ด (mai phet) — Not spicy. อร่อยมาก (aroi mak) — Very delicious. เก็บตังค์ด้วย (kep tang duay) — Check please.

At the market: ลดได้ไหม (lot dai mai?) — Can you discount? แพงไป (phaeng bpai) — Too expensive.

Staying safe: ช่วยด้วย (chuay duay) — Help me. โรงพยาบาลอยู่ที่ไหน (rong phayaabaan yuu tee nai?) — Where is the hospital?

Building connection: คนไทยน่ารัก (khon Thai naa rak) — Thai people are lovely. ประเทศไทยสวยมาก (bprathet Thai suay mak) — Thailand is very beautiful.
