Thai Sentence Structure Made Simple

Thai Sentence Structure Made Simple — Build Your Own Sentences

Understanding Thai sentence structure means you're not memorising phrases — you're building your own.

The basic template: [Subject] + [Verb] + [Object] + [Modifiers]. ฉัน + กิน + ข้าว + แล้ว = I eat rice already. Subject-Verb-Object — same as English. That's genuinely helpful.

Adding not: Put ไม่ (mai, falling tone) directly before the verb. ฉันไม่กินเนื้อ (Chan mai gin nuea) — I don't eat meat.

Adding tense/aspect: กำลัง (gamlang) before verb = currently doing: ฉันกำลังกิน = I'm eating. จะ (ja) before verb = will: ฉันจะกิน = I will eat. แล้ว (laew) after verb = already done: ฉันกินแล้ว = I've already eaten.

Asking yes/no questions: Add ไหม (mai, rising tone) at the end. คุณกินข้าวไหม? = Do you eat rice?

Asking open questions: Replace the unknown element with a question word. คุณกินอะไร? = What do you eat?

Descriptions and adjectives: In Thai, adjectives follow the noun. คนดี (khon dee) — good person (literally: person good). อาหารอร่อย (ahaan aroi) — delicious food (food delicious).

Stacking sentences: Use connectors: และ (lae) = and, แต่ (dtae) = but, เพราะ (phro) = because.

Once you understand this framework, you can build any Thai sentence from components. That's real language ability.
